The terrace of La Buga de Lobo is much like the others along Calle de Argumosa. It’s nice to sit out on a summer afternoon but nothing unique. Inside is another story. It’s a large bar covered in beautiful murals in a style somewhere between Latin tribal and graffiti. La Buga de Lobo also has local artwork for sale and other cultural events such as films, concerts and even a market for independent designers.

This is the kind of bar that epitomises the multicultural reputation of Lavapiés. The food is a mix of flavours from traditional madrileño to Caribbean and oriental influences. For example the eggs run the gauntlet from the traditional huevos rotos (a pair of fried eggs on top of chips) to the exotic huevos caribeños (literally Caribbean eggs).

Vaova is a colonial, African inspired cocktail bar in the heart of La Latina. From the outside it doesn't seem like much. It’s got a couple of tables outside but they are right by the road which is never really that appealing especially in this area where Plaza de la Paja is right around the corner offering many bars which much nicer terraces.

Step inside Vaova and it’s a wonderful surprise compared to the outside. The African inspired murals and deeply varnished wooden beams gives it a real old worldly colonial feel. During the day day they play old classics like Bob Dylan and the Beatles for a laid back vibe. At night the bar can get pretty full and lively but if you want something a little more chilled you can head downstairs where they have large sofas to relax on.

Bulevar is a lively, dimly lit bar with a terrace on plaza de Santa Bárbara. Inside, the lighting seems almost like a club atmosphere but despite this you can always have a quiet conversation as there are comfortable booths and not too loud music.

The back of the bar is decorated with back-lit coloured bottles. The tables are interesting as there are a few odd shaped booths. It's one of those bars where you are as happy standing or sitting, late at night for cocktails or during the day for a few beers.

During the summer months Bulevar has a nice terrace but if you are lucky enough to get a table, expect a little slower service.

El Vlajero is a bit of a classic in La Latina. With three floors it’s one of the largest bars in the area and it has recently been refurbished with a clean, light, hip atmosphere.

The first floor offers free WiFi during the day and food later at night. It has a modern clean feel with stainless steel high tables and brick walls. Up the steep stairs at the back of the bar you’ll find the second floor, which is very light and comfortable with large windows and vintage furniture. The walls are decorated with old wine boxes, flowers and greenery and is a nice contrast to the modern style of the first floor. During the day you can sit and have a quiet drink but at night it gets pretty busy so a cocktail standing at the bar is more likely.

The whole of the top floor is a pretty amazing terrace but for some reason it is shut until next summer, so we’ll have to wait and see if it’s undergone a makeover too.

Bar Guide The Blegger - Bar El Imperfecto in Madrid

A small bar that is absolutely reaming to the brim with tat, but nonetheless good. Already the entrance beckons you with blue and green neon lights but when you enter: lamps, chandeliers, disco balls, pictures, photos and mirrors every inch of this bar is filled with something.

There is a small terrace outside but that would be defeating the purpose of this bar. You have to enter to experience the sensory overload that is “El Imperfecto”. With the little seats and tables there is quite a cosy atmosphere helped by the friendly staff.

This is one of the better bars along the tree lined Calle de Argumosa which in itself is full of bars. Some would be put off by the smurf blue interior but with the cool paintings and Caribbean feel I rather like it. If it’s just too much for you, you can always sit out on the terrace and watch the people go by.

The food is very reasonably priced and a little different from the typical Spanish bars. For instance English speakers would usually expect to see the Mexican chilli con carne available in Spain but this is the first place I’ve seen it. It was pretty good too.

This is a great looking bar which is pretty large for Madrid especially in Lavapiés. There is a small street terrace and three rooms. The front main room is where the long wooden bar is situated. The first of the back rooms is fairly large and a nice place to grab a table if the front bar is full. The third room is very small and a little bit dismal being more of a passage way to get to the toilets.

The walls are lined with art exhibitions so there is usually something new to see and they often play a nice mix of blues.

Don't be fooled by the cheesy sign outside. This is definitely not a German themed beer garden. It's a modern clean bar come restaurant. The best part is the terrace at the back. A wooden decked oasis in the heart of Madrid.

La Tita Rivera has a couple of beers on tap even a darker one which is rare in this town. They serve pretty decent food even if it's a tad over priced for the portions.

This is the latest Madrid market just recently opened. Similar to Mercado de San Miguel and San Anton. It differs from the others in that it was never previously a food market but a market for general supplies. It has the usual mix of gourmet tapas and a young hip crowd. Exposed air-conditioning piping and a mix between wood and metal fixtures gives a converted factory feel reminiscent of the meatpacking district in NYC. It has three floors with a bar on each and many stalls to buy unique tapas. The real gem of the market are the two terraces which offer a nice opportunity to have a beer in the open air without the usual “botellons” present in the rest of Malasaña.

This is an old bar located on Plaza Dos de Mayo. With its smoke stained walls and old fixtures this place hasn’t really changed since the 70s. The real beauty of this bar is not actually inside. The terrace on Dos de Mayo is a prime spot to pass an afternoon drinking tinto de veranos on a hot summer’s day.
