Don't be fooled by the cheesy sign outside. This is definitely not a German themed beer garden. It's a modern clean bar come restaurant. The best part is the terrace at the back. A wooden decked oasis in the heart of Madrid.

La Tita Rivera has a couple of beers on tap even a darker one which is rare in this town. They serve pretty decent food even if it's a tad over priced for the portions.

Most of this small bar is taken up by the bar itself. This has the advantage of it always being easy to get a spot at the bar. Even if you don't there's a ledge going around the walls of the bar so there's always somewhere to put your beer.

You enter in either of the two entrances which are divided by the U-shaped bar. As you walk in you go down a set of stairs giving a good view of the whole bar. Order a small beer and you'll get a small tapas.

A comfortable relaxed bar with friendly staff. The top bar has a few tables and chairs next to the windows but is largely taken up by the bar. The decoration is a little kitsch but in a good way. For instance, the beer taps are pretty cool.

The bottom bar actually has a bar but I've always had to go upstairs for a beer. There are a few tables and couches down here and it's the best place to come if you want a little privacy. Very occasionally they'll also have live music.

A great place with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Unpretentious with simple decoration but a lively atmosphere. Great for a few beers and tapas any day of the week.

This is one of quite a few basque tapas places in La Latina but there are a few tables and chairs in here so if your lucky you could get a seat probably during the week is your best bet.

Lamiak has a sister bar with the same name in Lavapiés.

A bar with a surfing theme. Fitting as we are 350km from the nearest beach. A young drunken crowd means this place is always fun.

You'll have to stand as there are only a few stools scattered around the bar. Everything is the surfing theme from the videos they play to the wave painted walls. The dimly lit bar is pretty small and usually pretty busy so be prepared to push a few folk out of the way to get to the bar.

This is an old bar located on Plaza Dos de Mayo. With its smoke stained walls and old fixtures this place hasn’t really changed since the 70s. The real beauty of this bar is not actually inside. The terrace on Dos de Mayo is a prime spot to pass an afternoon drinking tinto de veranos on a hot summer’s day.

A young hip crowd and relaxed atmosphere. La Realidad specialises in Gin tonic which is a bit of a fad in Madrid. With every bar trying to out do it's neighbour this place holds it's own. One of the things I like most about this bar is that it is constantly changing. The wallpaper alone always seems to be filled with new graffiti or the latest art.

The front has a U-shaped bar dividing the front room in two. Hanging off the bar itself are little books of "micro-poetry". The decoration is interesting in that every seat or chair is different. For instance the back bar is filled with tiny seats. Who knows, maybe there was a local nursery school closing and La Realidad got the tables and chairs cheap.

Tapas at Mercado San Antón Calle de Augusto Figueroa, 24, Madrid, Spain

This is a newly refurbished market that was built on the success of the Mercado de San Miguel. It differs from the more famous Mercado de San Miguel because it is a new building with a clean and trendy touch as opposed to the traditional market in the city centre.

There is a terrace bar at the top which is surprisingly not too expensive considering the clientele and the area. On the second floor there are many stalls serving tapas of all types. Again the prices are not as high as you would have thought from the look of the place.
